From the Mountains to the Sea
Five days between the Huíla highlands and the desert coast of Namibe, with the Serra da Leba in between.
It begins at two thousand metres, in the cold air of Lubango, and ends with your feet in the sand. In between comes the descent of the Serra da Leba, those switchbacks everyone has seen in a photograph and almost nobody has driven. Once on the coast we sleep three nights in two different places — beaches where the desert runs into the Atlantic and where, in the right season, whales are visible from the terrace. It is the route that changes landscape fastest: from the two thousand metres of Tundavala to sea level, in two hours of driving.

Itinerary
Luanda → Lubango · Tundavala
Morning flight to Lubango. Lunch in town and up to the Tundavala gap, a thousand-metre drop over the plain — the best place in the country to watch the sun go down. Back to Lubango for the welcome cocktail and introductions.
Serra da Leba → Namibe → Praia da Mariquita
Early start for the descent of the Serra da Leba, with a stop at the viewpoint over the switchbacks. Then the plateau ends abruptly and the desert begins. Lunch in Moçâmedes and up the coast to Praia da Mariquita, where we stay. An afternoon of sea and nothing else.
Baía das Pipas → Praia do Soba
Morning at Baía das Pipas, the cove that appears in every photograph of Namibe and is still almost empty. Lunch on the beach and along the coast to Praia do Soba for the second night. Fish dinner with our hosts. Between July and October, whales pass within sight.
Praia do Soba · coast and desert
A full day on the coast, without packing. Morning boat trip or a walk along the cliffs with our hosts. After lunch, into the desert to see the welwitschias, plants that live over a thousand years and grow only in this strip of Africa. Back at sunset for dinner on the beach.
Coast → Moçâmedes → Luanda
An unhurried morning on the beach. Back to Moçâmedes with a stop at the bay and the old town, farewell lunch and transfer to the airport. Flight back to Luanda.
